What are the benefits of Thin Clients?
- Lower Operational Costs – In an office environment where there are multiple workstations, a thin client setup would definitely equal to lower operational costs especially with all workstations being connected to a single server unit.
- Longer Lifespan – Since there are no moving parts, thin clients last a long time. In the event that there is an issue at the clients end, it can be easy as replacing the broken unit and replacing it with another one. There is virtually very little wear and tear with a thin client setup, hence little maintenance.
- Energy Efficiency – A slim unit is said to consume 5W-40W opposed to regular PC’s which consume 60W-250W (on average and depending on the specs of the machines). In addition, thin clients require little to no air condition/re-circulation which minimises operating costs and maintenance costs.
- Remote Efficiency – Arguably one of the biggest benefits is the ability to (simultaneously) access the server remotely from anywhere in the world.
- Superior Security – Since users will only have access to the server by network connections, security measures like different access levels for different users can be implemented. That way, users with lower access levels will not be able to see, know, or in worst case scenarios, hack into the confidential files and applications of the entire organisation. They are all secured at the server’s end, which is also a way of securing data files in the event of natural disasters. The servers will be the only machines that need to survive the disaster as the main location of all the saved data. Immediately after the disaster, new “clients” can easily be connected to the server, for as long as the latter remains intact.
What to look for in a Thin Client?
- User Friendly – To begin with, you’re going to want easy single manager server installation. A best practice is to be able to implement the program and begin using it in less than one hour, whether Thin Client Software or Zero Client Software. Other essentials include ease of integration, secure login system, understandable install guide, and a detailed graphical user interface.
- Traditional Network Management Features – Your Thin or Zero Client Software should be able to configure, maintain, control, and even report from Linux and Windows based Clients. Central, automated discovery and configuration features should streamline group management and monitoring of devices. Of course, you’ll want to be able to manage your Clients from major web browsers with ease of use. Support for scheduled tasks including firmware updates and Wake-on-LAN (WOL) support are also key.
- Internet Cloud Management Feature – Nowadays, if you can’t manage remote locations and you need to, you’re in trouble. Look for Thin Client Software or Zero Client Software that can support internet connectivity, so that you can manage offsite locations like small office and home networks. Thin Client and Zero Client end users who are “out of network” should certainly be able to be handled and managed in the same manner as traditional managed networks.
- Customer Service Focus – Let’s face it, you’re going to have questions and bumps in the road. If you find a technology partner that does not charge for Thin or Zero Client Management Software, good. If you find one that does not charge, and has an easy-to-understand, better. Thin Client Software and Zero Client Software programs should be easy to work with and expedite management of your Thin and Zero VDI Clients with efficiency, while providing central maintenance and full administrative control. Be sure to consider the above key features when conducting your research for the best software management tool.
